Chromium For Pregnancy

Chromium is a trace element that seems to be low in most North American diets. The recommended dosage is 200 mcg daily. Surveys have shown that most women only consume roughly 50% of the minimum suggested chromium intake. Insufficient dietary intake of chromium may be a greater problem for pregnant and/or nursing women because both conditions place increased burdens on body stores of chromium. The developing fetus appears to concentrate chromium from the mother. Chromium can be measured from hair samples, breast milk, blood, and urine. Hair chromium decreases after pregnancy and lactation and it takes the average woman over four years until her hair chromium levels have been replenished. There is a definite indication for supplementation and much more research needs to be done on this topic. A woman should not take any supplement without a discussion with her health care provider.
